Miscellaneous encounters of the fun kind

Standing in the Tokyo Shinkansen station waiting for the Kyoto bound train a sumo wrestler in full traditional dress walks by.

Entering the grounds of a Buddhist Temple and having a priest call out to ask if I wanted an orientation in English. Turns out he's Japanese American from Los Angeles, moved to Japan a couple of years ago, became a priest and has been here ever since. Fascinating guy - used to work for the World Bank, then as design director for a huge ad agency.

Discovering that hawks  - bunches of them - fly over the river, hover near the bridges and apparently are not terribly afraid of humans.

A little girl fell down and scraped her elbow. I handed her grateful mom a bandaid (and was very glad it had cute hearts on it). 5 minutes later an incredibly handsome man is bowing to me and it took me a second to connect that he was the father saying thank you for the bandaid.

Did you know that turtles and cranes like to hang out together? In fact, from what I can tell, the more turtles the better for a crane.

Deer in Nara have extremely soft noses but their hair is not soft. They are unbelievably cute though.

Cats like to hang out in the sunny spot on shrines.
